Before the Procedure

Prior to your eyelift, your doctor will likely do the following:

  • perform a detailed physical examination and aesthetic analysis of your eyelid and facial area
  • discuss your goals and expectations
  • review your medical history
  • take photographs
  • possibly refer you to an opthalmologist for further testing
  • possibly order additional blood tests

Side Effects

While generally considered to be a safe procedure, some side effects and complications have been reported. It is important to discuss with your doctor expected side effects such as:

  • puffiness
  • bruising
  • discomfort
  • dry or watery eyes

Possible Complications
During your consultation, your doctor will discuss the potential risks of the operation. Every surgical procedure involves some level of risk, and the potential risks from an eyelift include:

  • pooling of blood (temporary)
  • infection
  • scarring
  • inability to fully close the eyes (lagophthalmos)
  • possible poor wound healing
  • eyelid asymmetry
  • dry eye problems
  • eyelid malposition (ectropion)
  • damage to deeper structures, such as blood vessels and nerves
  • eyelash loss
  • pain – chronic pain is very infrequent

If you have a history of dryness to the eyes which requires frequent use of drops, you have a higher risk of complications resulting from this surgery.
